It is a tremendous honor to join my dearest friends in continuing the legacy of someone so extraordinary. Karla was one of my closest friends throughout my adult life. She lived boldly and unapologetically, balanced by a calm, gentle spirit. She loved her friends and family with her whole heart, and if you were in her circle, you were inspired by her creativity, moved by her kindness, and endlessly entertained by her quick, razor-sharp wit.

When Karla was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, she faced it with unmatched courage and determination. Together with her devoted husband, Mark, she pursued cutting-edge treatments, traveling across the country to consult with leading physicians and continuing to fight every step of the way.

Even in her final days, Karla’s humor remained intact, embracing the very essence of who she was. She left this world surrounded by her favorite music, the chatter of conversation, the occasional game, and soft laughter of her family and her closest friends. It struck me as a bit poetic that she left this world the exact same way that she lived.

“Scan While You Can” became her mission. She shared her message with everyone she met, determined to spare others the heartbreak of wondering “what if” by advocating for early cancer screenings. A promise made by her brother Russ at her bedside gave her final days profound purpose, and from that promise, the Karla Kay Cancer Screening Fund was born.

I live in Melbourne with my two daughters, managing a large healthcare company and doing freelance PR work in the music industry. My commitment to service has included board leadership roles, such as with the Central Florida YMCA, and I had the privilege of serving as President of the board Karla created to establish her school, a passion project that embodied her life’s work.

Carrying on Karla’s mission with my closest friends is an incredible honor and a small way to repay the immeasurable gift of being part of her remarkable life. Her legacy continues to inspire and drive us all.
